Four reasons I don’t restore a backup to new iPhones

I was showing my new iPhone 6 to a friend the other day and he was surprised to see that I had so few apps on my handset. I currently have 29, which barely takes up two home screens.

“Wait,” he said, “haven’t you used iOS since like forever? You had to have bought more apps than that.” He’s right, of course. You should have seen his jaw drop when I explained that I don’t restore backups after purchasing an new [company]Apple[/company] iPhone; I always set them up as new handsets.

Skype is hanging up on calls to landlines and mobiles in India

Skype users in India will be losing the ability to make outgoing calls to landlines or mobile phones in that country on November 10. The Times of India first reported the news on Monday, saying the Microsoft-owned company gave no reason for the upcoming policy change.

A support page on Skype’s website confirms the news but doesn’t explain the change:

As of 10 November 2014, if you are in India, calling from Skype to mobiles and landlines within India will unfortunately no longer be available. This change only affects Skype calls to landlines and mobiles; you can still make free Skype-to-Skype calls within India, and you can still call mobiles and landlines in India from outside the country (as well as make calls from India to other countries).

Reports of Twitter shifting to an algorithmic timeline raise concerns about user control and experience

Twitter is signaling that it’s going to change how it shows the timeline to users, or at least experiment with it. Here’s what the company CFO actually said yesterday, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

“Twitter’s timeline is organized in reverse chronological order, a delivery system that has not changed since the product was created eight years ago and one that some early adopters consider sacred to the core Twitter experience. But this “isn’t the most relevant experience for a user,” Noto said. Timely tweets can get buried at the bottom of the feed if the user doesn’t have the app open, for example. “Putting that content in front of the person at that moment in time is a way to organize that content better.”

Mathew Ingram read the WSJ report and interpreted it to mean that a “Facebook-style feed is coming, whether you like it or not.”…
